Portable Water Collector

by Victoria Nguyen

In the Martian, Matt Damian collects water to grow potatoes. I created a portable water collector that takes in hydrogen and oxygen and creates water. Once enough water has filled the container, it will turn off.

Mechanics

Arduino

Water Level Sensor

12V water pump

2x LEDs

12V power relay module

External 9V battery and adaptor

Sketches

Water Sensor

Using analogue output, I detect how far the sensor is in the water. The more the sensor is in the water, the higher the output voltage will be.

Schematics

Here is my full schematic. I use a relay power module and an external battery to power the water pump. I am able to control the relay using the arduino. Once the button is pressed, it will begin the sequence of events. If the water is indicated to be low, the water pump will turn on. Once it gets to a certain point, the water will shut off. The two LEDs are attached to both sides of the box to signify hydrogen and oxygen being collected.

Issues and Problems

Water pump- getting the water pump to correctly work

Button- the button was only working when I held down the button. I fixed the issue in my code

Sensitivity of sensor- very finicky. If water splashes on the sensor but it is not at the desired water level, it can turn off.

Wiring- I am connecting many male to female wires together which is not the best connection for current. Some wires were faulty which caused my project not to work several times.
