Largely inspired by the tech market’s latest hot topic, the humanoid robot NEO Beta, Dystobot taps into the fears of what may come as we continue our bold ventures into advanced technology.
As the late Stephen Hawking said, “[AI] could be the best thing to happen to our society, or the worst” stressing the need to prepare for the “potential risks” (CNBC, 2018). Well–the DystoBot Omega (Dystopian and final–as in, this is gonna be the end of us) is the cumulation of those fears.
This simulation, inspired by the Police 1983 hit, “Every Breath You Take”, envisions a world where humanity has become too trustful of AI. The code represents an AI assistant hotline where users might go to diagnose their problems with their at-home robot. The character interacting with the helpbot “Utilis” , is concerned about some unnerving behaviors displayed by their Dystobot. Yet, despite not explicitly expressing this, Utilis somehow seems to already know….
The chat input displays a grayed out text throughout the course of the interaction, this represents the internal monologue of the character and is meant to guide the user’s responses to Utilis. In theory, this is to ensure that the gist of the users input aligns with Utilis’ output, though users are ultimately free to type what they please.
Throughout the duration of this project I caught myself becoming intertwined with the character interacting with Utilis. As code presented issues I could not explain, I wondered…just for a second…who is really in control?
