Postcard to Frances

Madison Steinau

1920’s Atlanta offers all the exciting new promises of a rising city…

Something, however, is on the loose… what happened to Ernest?

This postcard is an artifact of that mystery. One hundred years later, the unknown answer to this question is just as troubling for contemporary viewers as it is the Frances who seemingly never received his note.

Reflections
I used to read a lot of Sherlock Holmes and other classic mysteries throughout undergrad. As my tolerance and intrigue for darker, grittier stories increased, I realized the impact of fictional uncertainty and pain had on my outlook of my surroundings. My daily commute down North Ave past Civic Center Station made these fictional mystery scenes feel much more real. I used this assignment to blend familiar Atlanta settings with an intimate exploration of relationships and lost communication. While viewers will never know what happened to Ernest or Frances, the bloody and aged paper might signal it is best left unknown for centuries to come.
